We may look like a giant company but it’s really just the two of us, Rhett & Maria with three oceanfront condos in Maui.

How did we end up here?   Neither of us married well and we weren’t fortunate enough to have a trust fund.   That left two paths; hard work or dumb luck – we chose dumb luck!

It all started as a side hustle.  In our quest to avoid cafeteria food in our golden years, we decided that we needed a retirement plan.  That well thought out plan involved a vacation to Maui almost 20 years ago.  While strolling around the beach, we stumbled into an open house at an oceanfront home for sale well beyond our finances.   There were free drinks and a lot of people so we sat down in the living room and made ourselves at home trying to blend in with the people who had made much better life decisions than us.   We met a couple that we’ll call Joe and Naomi who told us about the new condo they had just bought and their plan to escape their corporate jobs. Their business model was simple.   If enough people rented one of their Maui condos each year, they didn’t need to have real jobs!  We looked at each other and said “where do we sign up?”

Being the brilliant entrepreneurs that we are, we quickly realized; we don’t have any money to purchase property, we have two kids, and we have jobs.   What were we thinking?

That led to the realization that in order to pull this “retirement plan” off we may actually have to work hard for a number of years, sell our house, save some money and slowly build the side hustle into a retirement plan.

So here we are 20 years later sitting in our beach chairs with our two dogs Owen and Wilson helping people have awesome vacations in Maui!
